Ogdensburg woman gets probation for theft of more than $9K
An Ogdensburg woman was placed on five years of probation Monday in St. Lawrence County Court for the theft of more than $9,500 between 2012 and 2013. Jennifer I. Hamilton, formerly Jennifer Smithers, 40, of 1006 Lafayette St., pleaded guilty to fourth-degree grand larceny on Oct. 15, 2013, a part of a plea deal with the district attorney's office.
St. Lawrence County sees $3 million shortfall in 2015 sales tax revenues
Sales tax revenues collected in St. Lawrence County for 2015 came in more than $3 million less than budgeted, according to year-end totals provided by county officials. This is the second year in a row the county's sales tax collections were significantly lower than projected.

Former Norfolk man repeats not guilty plea to rape after conviction overturned
The former Norfolk man who had his April 2014 conviction for felonies related to the 2013 rape of a 15-year-old girl overturned by a state appellate court in November pleaded not guilty to the charges again Tuesday in St. Lawrence County Court. Patrick R. Wright, 33, formerly of 262 Marsh Road, now an inmate at the Coxsackie Correctional Facility, pleaded not guilty to third-degree rape, three counts of third-degree criminal sexual act, endangering the welfare of a child and first-degree unlawfully dealing with a child.

Many New York State Assembly Republicans joined Democrats last week in passing a new ethics bill 137-to-4, but one North Country Assembly member says the measure doesn't go far enough. "Like New York's good-government groups, I am very disappointed by the Assembly Democrats' ethics proposal, which doesn't go deep enough to root out corruption or punish those who break the public trust," said Marc Butler, R-Newport, whose 118th Assembly District includes St. Lawrence County towns from Norfolk and Madrid south to Colton, Clifton and Fine.

Canton officials resurrect shared highway garage idea
The idea of creating one highway facility for three entities - St. Lawrence County, the village of Canton and the town of Canton - was first proposed about four years ago. Canton Town Supervisor David T. Button said plans were put on the back burner when the price estimate came in at $6 million, but the idea was never ruled out and there now seems to be renewed interest.
